The Foundation of Our Mission
We believe that Jesus is life. He is God in the flesh and He has come to bring us into a right relationship with the Father and to reveal His will to us (John 1:1-4). We believe that apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). The Mission of this ministry is to follow Jesus. Our ministry is focused around the two greatest commandments and the Mission of Jesus, in that order.
God’s desire for His people is to love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:29-31). This is the greatest commandment and should be the center of the purpose of our life. Our Mission can’t be primarily ministry or even loving people; it must be pursuing to love God with everything we are. Eternal life is knowing Him (John 17:3), not doing things for Him. So the foundation of our Mission is to love Him and know Him.
The second greatest commandment is to love other people. God is love (1 John 4:8). As His people, we need to learn to love as He loves. Jesus is the perfect demonstration of love, and that is why we are called to walk as Jesus did (1 John 2:3-6). Jesus gave us a new commandment on the last night of His life. He said that we are to love one another as He loved us and that by this love the world would know that we are His disciples (John 13:34-35). Jesus’ love was radical. He perfectly obeyed God’s will, never wronged anyone, He had compassion on people, He endured persecution and never sinned in response and He even loved His enemies. We believe that God’s will for us is that we follow in Jesus’ steps and love with His radical love (1 Peter. 2:21-24). As a ministry, we desire to raise up a people who love as Jesus loved.
Jesus gave His Mission to His disciples at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. This Mission is our Mission as well: Matthew 28:18–20 (NASB95) "18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
The foundation of this Mission is Jesus. He has all authority and He is with His followers always (v18, 20). His Mission for us is to go into all the world and make disciples. A disciple is a follower. So Jesus is calling His followers to go and make more followers who make more followers. Baptism represents us dying to ourselves and our old ways of sin and now aligning ourselves with Jesus as our new Lord. That is why we are to baptize people. He also calls us to teach them to obey all of His commands. This is essential because if we are going to be a follower of Jesus, we have to know His ways and where He is going so that we can follow Him.
The Strategy of Our Mission
We believe in discipleship. We believe that Jesus’ Mission was not to create spectators but instead disciples who follow Him and live to do His will. Our ministry is structured around discipleship. It starts with Bible Studies where we walk through books of the Bible looking to see what it really means to follow Jesus. Through these Bible Studies we teach the importance of following Jesus with our whole life and our need for discipleship.
For those who are interested in discipleship, we first recommend that they begin studying the Bible on their own. We have several different personal Bible study plans designed to help people learn to study the Bible for themselves and give them strategies on how to understand and apply the teachings of the Bible to their life. Next we offer personalized discipleship meetings where a trained discipler meets with you and walks you through a series of discipleship lessons that are designed to help us love God with everything we are and to love others like Jesus does.
For those who desire to continue to be discipled, we have other groups specifically designed for those being discipled. These groups offer more in depth teachings that focus on how to practically follow Jesus with our whole life. Once someone goes through the discipleship process, we have another group where we train people to disciple others. This is essential because our Mission is to make disciples who make disciples. We believe that God wants to use all of His people to do ministry, not just a few elite leaders. We want to equip the whole body of Christ to be able to make disciples who make disciples (Eph. 4:11-16).
This focus on discipleship is very important for our own personal growth because our life matters. Jesus doesn’t want us to just sit and watch others do ministry. He wants to use all of His followers to reach others and make disciples. When we understand His Mission and how it applies to us personally, it motivates us to learn God’s word and apply it to our life so that we can then help others do the same.
Who We Are:
Since giving my life to Jesus, I have been impacted by His desire for me to do His will in every area of my life, and make me whole. Most recently that has looked like being a light in my professional life as I coordinate programs that promote physical fitness in schools. Public health involves a lot of areas that focus on environmental, behavioral, and physical aspects of health. I enjoy my job, and believe my work helps people. But God has been teaching me that these things are temporary and the most important component of health is the health of our relationship with Him. God desires that everyone come to know Him deeply. Each day I get to be a light in the lives of those I work with to share this awesome truth!
It has been so encouraging and a blessing to have been able to find a close knit community of believers that are unified in trying to learn and obey all of God's commands. With the help of the people I have come to view as my family, I've been able to learn what it truly means to be a follower of Christ. Through the process of discipleship I've learned what it looks like to live a holy life, read my bible, be motivated to do so, and really understand it for my self. I have come to learn what it looks like to love others and myself the way that God wants us to, but most importantly I've learned to love and find a close and intimate relationship with my Creator whom I can confidently call my Father and Friend.
BAM! Just like that I was willing to walk away from a PhD program I had been in for three years after hearing the gospel, repenting and giving my life over to following Jesus. Seeking to live for Him first, I was able to see Him work in my life as I interacted with my family, spouse, coworkers, the students I mentored, and everyone I encountered. Through daily reading and applying the Bible to my life and weekly accountability to help me stay on God's path, my purpose in life has become something I can confidently walk out daily, instead of the pressures of accolades, awards and recognition.
I grew up just doing my own thing, which led me to create my own path and live however I wanted. This seemed cool at the time. I had heard about Jesus, read a little about Jesus, and I even went to where I thought He was supposed to hang out (church) quite a bit growing up. It wasn’t until I made the decision to consistently read and apply the Bible, in context, that I really realized what it’s all about. Being around others that are also serving Him with their life has helped me to keep going and growing in my own relationship. Aye man, Jesus is Lord and a true relationship with Him is life. He just is that dude, worth giving it all up for.
I couldn't imagine leading my family towards Jesus without the help of the awesome examples that my wife and son get to learn from being a part of GCDM. We are surrounded by people that love Jesus and are seeking to advance His kingdom on this earth. In the world we live in it can be challenging to raise godly children because of the negative influences around us. However, when your children are surrounded by a body of believers that love on them like Jesus does, encourage them to love Jesus, exemplify a Christ-centered life, and lay down their lives to tell the world about the life changing love of Jesus, it's hard not to raise godly children because that's what they see being lived out all around them.
